History

André & Associates Interpretation and Design Ltd. is a family owned business that has seen many changes in over 55 years of operation.

Our team is made up of enthusiastic and talented individuals, with core staff who have been major players in all our projects. We have an organizational structure that reflects a strong belief in a team with equal value and responsibility for each player. Over the years we have established strong relationships with a wide variety of specialists and this enables our team to expand in size as projects require. We have worked closely with all of these team members creating a strong network of creative experts.

The company was originally founded in 1961 as Jean Jacques André Design and Graphic Arts. In 1970, Jean Jacques André, our founder, joined the British Columbia Provincial Museum, now the Royal British Columbia Museum. As Director of Exhibits he headed the Exhibit Division Team until 1982. Jean Jacques and his very talented team developed innovative ways of presentation and interpretation that produced The Modern History Gallery, The First Peoples Gallery, and the Natural History Gallery: Living Land, Living Sea.

In 1982, JJ André Consultants Ltd. was formed. Rennie Knowlton joined the firm shortly after, bringing his outstanding talents as an illustrator and designer. In 1985, Bianca Message, JJ’s daughter, (now the President of the company) joined the team. Her academic background in Anthropology and Cultural Resource Management served to round out the capabilities of the growing firm.

In 1994, JJ André & Associates Ltd. was created in order to reflect the changing face of the company.

In September 2000 a further recognition of the firm’s growth and changes resulted in the formation of André & Knowlton Associates with Rennie Knowlton and Bianca Message and Yvette André forming a strong, creative, enthusiastic and experienced leadership. They truly believed in, and continued, the established design philosophy that JJ had developed, but also forged a unique creative course of their own.

The company further evolved in 2005 into André & Associates Interpretation & Design Ltd. as Bianca Message, then the sole owner of the company, expanded the team’s capability and expertise in areas of the arts, education, graphics, multimedia and fabrication, enhancing her father’s original vision for the company.  JJ, though semi-retired, continued to provide the team with unparalleled design input and advice.

Today the company is owned and directed by Bianca Message and her husband, Bill Message.
